1. Collarbone Bobs: Soft, Fluid, Versatile

The collarbone bob is one of the most wearable medium haircut trends of 2026. Often called the “non-committal bob” or collarbone-grazing lob, this length features a strong perimeter with invisible internal layering. ARC Scissors Ambassador and curly hair specialist John W George (@johnwgeorge) explains, “On the medium side, I see a round bob with a tapered nape making a strong return. With an emphasis on the nape taper. Full and round à la the ’90s style.”

How does John remove weight from a collarbone-length bob? “I like to use wide-tooth texturizing scissors to debulk hair. The wide tooth texturizer gives more control over the amount of weight being removed,” John adds.

To complete his perfect toolkit, he pairs a texturizer with the ARC™ Scissors PARAGON II—here’s why. “I love the PARAGON II because of the quality of the blade, as it allows me a ton of control for a clean, precise straight line when cutting. And for my hand, it feels the most natural for me. No awkward adjusting of my fingers and hands. The layout of the PARAGON II for me is quite ergonomic.”

Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Team Member Ashlee Norman (@ashleenormanhair) shares: “2026 is all about sculpted shapes that move naturally with the hair. We will see a soft, sculpted bob with a rounded silhouette and subtle micro-layers to soften edges and enhance flow.”

With ’90s inspo gaining popularity, celebrity stylist and Wella Professionals Ambassador Dereq Clark (@dereqc) adds, “I’m seeing a resurgence of the ’90s old money bob coming back around. Keep as much weight as possible and add internal layers that create a lot of movement.”

2. Bob Customization: Curly & Texture-First Bobs

In 2026, bobs are increasingly designed to work with natural texture, not against it. Curly French bobs, air-dry shapes and texture-first cuts celebrate volume, movement and individuality. OLAPLEX Global Ambassador Vernon François shares that texture-first techniques are in:Cuts that respect the hair’s natural pattern. I’m seeing more people leaning into volume, length and movement, particularly with curly hair, rather than cutting against it.”

Moroccanoil® Academy Director Cassie Siskovic (@cassiskovic) agrees, calling out the rise in shapes like the curly French bob. “It’s a bold, short bob that celebrates natural curl and movement. Adding a fringe elevates the look while making curls easier than ever to wear effortlessly.” Her recommended product pairing is Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream and Moroccanoil® Treatment Mist.

Pamela Anderson just debuted a platinum curly bob at the Tory Burch show during New York Fashion Week:

Wella Professionals Ambassador, viral bixie cutting expert and ARC™ Scissors Ambassador Briana Cisneros (@brianacisneros) supports this by adding, “Movement is everything, and perfection is out. Cut for real life, not just the salon moment. We’ll be seeing lived‑in bobs designed to air‑dry, letting natural texture lead the direction.” Her top tips for textured styling? “Diffuse more, curl iron less. Sometimes, styling only the front hairline is enough.”

3. Medium-Length Shag

The medium-length shag is one of the defining haircut trends of 2026, evolving into softer, more wearable wolf-inspired shapes. Holly shares, “The shag in all of its variations and ever-changing names (IYKYK) is hotter than ever. The midlength rocker shag was originally coined as the wolf cut in the early ’80s because of its distinctive shaggy shape. It’s meant to fall effortlessly forward, framing the face.

Defining Features of the Modern Midlength Shag:

  • Lots of textured layers throughout for volume
  • Bangs and temple pieces are cut to flow and frame the face seamlessly
  • Tapers at the lower neck and shoulders for a contoured shape
  • Suitable for all textures, from straight to very curly

Technical Tips for Building a Midlength Shag from Holly Vatter:

  • Remove weight intentionally, not randomly. Target areas where bulk restricts movement to preserve the integrity of the shape.
  • Create negative space internally. Focus on carving space within the haircut rather than thinning the perimeter.
  • Start at the bulkiest point, not the ends. Begin at least two inches away from the root and work through the interior to maintain structure.
  • Visualize “one ribbon into three.” Break up dense sections into smaller ribbons of movement using controlled, fluid cutting motions.
  • Taper from interior to ends. Gradually reduce weight as you move downward to avoid over-texturized or weak perimeters. Debulking the ends alone flattens interior volume and compromises the shape.

Below, get the full shag breakdown from Redken Ambassador and ARC™ Scissors Ambassador Gilad Goldstein (@myguiltycrown)—the haircutter behind some of the most viral layered cuts on your feed.

  • Shaggy layers and fringe are driving medium-length trends: “Medium hair is all about shaggy layers and bangs right now.”
  • Flip the ends for a modern, edgy finish: “People are styling their hair with flipped-up ends… It’s a modern take on messy, MySpace-inspired hair, polished just enough for today.”
  • Channel cutting allows precise weight control: “Channeling is my go-to technique. It allows me to control exactly where I remove weight and how deep I go into the strand. It’s one of the most customizable ways to create soft edges and natural movement while respecting the haircut’s shape.”
  • Use longer blades for efficiency and refinement: “I often use the ARC™ Scissors  6.5” PARAGON II: It’s strong and long enough to work efficiently while still giving me the precision I need.”

Moroccanoil® Global Ambassador, salon owner and shag cutting expert Rachel Williams concludes: “Cuts in 2026 are about movement and versatility, not rigidity. We’ll continue to see modern shags and soft wolf-inspired cuts—refined, wearable and texture-forward.”

Product Pro Tip for Medium-Length Cuts: Irinel shares, “The product choice has to complement the haircut. You never want to weigh down movement or over-style. For air-dried looks, I love using lightweight conditioning and soft-hold products like the Dyson OMEGA Leave-in Conditioner, or the Rizos Curls Curl Cream that enhance natural texture.”

Salon owner and ARC™ Scissors Ambassador Ray Hornback (@rayvoltagebeauty) agrees, explaining that midlength looks are great for clients who want to test shorter styles without fully committing to a bob: “Medium-length styles will always be a big hit for the clients that want to look more sophisticated, without going all the way to a bob length. Soft layers will allow for versatility.”

Marina Sellecchia (@colorbymarina), TRUSS Global Ambassador and luxury colorist, agrees, adding that: “Midlength cuts will be it this year. Think intentional clean lines with soft movement. Keep the cuts grow-out-friendly and versatile. Add face-framing that blends and accentuates the client’s best features. Keep ends full: Wispy ends are out.”
