Creative Color Block How-To: Soft, Diffused Copper Sunset
Color blocking has officially entered its next evolution: Today’s version is softer, more diffused and completely customizable—which makes it the perfect entry point for clients who want creative color without diving into the full-vivid world.
BTC Editors spent the day in NYC at the Cutler Salon with Pulp Riot Artist and vivid color expert Kelly Martin (@kellyawesomesauce) to break down why this new take on color blocking is blowing up. Plus, learn exactly how she built her modern “sunset” copper look on BTC Senior Editor Lauren Freas.
Why Soft, Wearable Color Blocking Is Having a Major Moment
The resurgence of creative color isn’t about high-impact: It’s about self-expression that fits seamlessly into everyday.
“I love seeing the evolution of different hair trends because this evolution develops from stylists customizing the trend into what translates best for a client’s everyday life,” Kelly explained. “This diffused take on color blocking makes the traditional vivid palette wearable for anyone. It’s a subtle way to infuse personality into an everyday style. I like to think of it as low-maintenance color with a creative kick.”
What makes this moment especially exciting is the cultural shift driving it. Clients are moving away from traditional ideas of what’s acceptable and embracing hair as a form of identity. “The stereotypes about age, gender, hair type or career are so antiquated,” Kelly noted. “I love the way people are putting more focus on self-care and leaning into their individuality through creative color.”
How-To: Soft, Wearable Copper Sunset Color Block
This lived-in color block is a bold yet wearable color palette that features a soft copper and violet statement panel that transitions into pink and gold tones. Below, Kelly shared her full placement process and formulas, all powered by Pulp Riot’s iconic Semi-Permanent shades.
Pro Tip: She recommends treating this service as a double process for the best vibrancy and longevity.
- On the roots: Apply the permanent copper shade
- For the highlights: Lighten the hair with Pulp Riot #BlondeAF Lightener while the roots process
- Before the semi application: Shampoo and fully dry the hair (no conditioner, which can create slip that interferes with semi-permanent adhesion) to prep for the semi-permanent application

1. Refresh the Copper Roots
Using vertical sections, Kelly begins by coloring Lauren’s regrowth to refresh the copper base with Formula A.
2. Highlighting for Maximum Color Block Impact
Kelly approaches highlight placement from the nape upward, beginning with slices. Save her tips for high-impact color block placement:
- Begin with a bold foilyage technique at the nape for maximum impact
- Focus on how hair naturally falls and how it’s styled forward
- Ensure any pieces that will be pulled toward the face are fully saturated
“Those forward-pulling pieces are your money pieces in creative color,” Kelly shared. “They need intentional placement.”
Here’s how Kelly shifts her technique as she works up the head for an impactful but seamless blend:
- Place teased weaves on top of the slices for softness
- Leave some natural pieces for dimension
- Increase diffusion near the apex of the head to avoid harsh lines
3. Begin the Sunset & Copper Semi-Permanent Application
Wash and dry to prep for the semi-permanent application, starting with the vivid panels and finishing with Formula F all-over. Kelly approaches the sunset with the following shades, melting each tone together for a seamless transition:
- Formula C (Zone 1): Pulp Riot Semi-Permanent Color Jam + a splash of Velvet
- Formula D (Zone 2): Pulp Riot Semi-Permanent Color Blush + a splash of First Base
- Formula E (Zone 3): Pulp Riot Semi-Permanent Color Lemon + a splash of Shag Rug
Kelly depends on Pulp Riot’s newly reformulated Semi-Permanent line, which is designed to prevent overworking, making it a game-changer for blending multiple tones or building gradients. “You can work the color in, melt and blend without worrying, ‘Did I manipulate this too much?’” Kelly explained. “It takes the guesswork out and saves so much time and product.”
Since the reformulation, Pulp Riot’s industry-loved Semi-Permanent offers 40 vibrant intermixable shades that:
- Last up to 50 washes
- Fade on tone
- Feature 86 percent more shine
- Offer 3 times less breakage

4. Rinse Smart to Preserve Contrast
Creative color requires a strategic rinse to avoid muddying the palette. Here’s how to ensure your copper and color block stay bright.
- Using high-pressure, cold water
- Rinsing darker tones first
- Holding lighter or more delicate pieces out of the water stream
- Applying conditioner on lighter sections as a barrier if needed
Bonus: Behind Kelly’s Copper “Sunset” Color Block Inspiration
Copper is having a major moment, but Kelly elevates it by pulling inspiration from nature-inspired palettes like:
- Sunsets
- Autumn foliage
- Golden hour highlights
She loves enhancing copper with tones like yellow, pink, peach, red or purple, depending on the mood, haircut and client personality.
“Don’t be afraid to blend shades with your brush, hand or even your fingers,” she adds. “Slow and low with the lightener is key for clean lift. Give yourself time, that’s how magic happens.”
