Blonde Toner: When To Skip or Use Purple Pigment Instead

One look that never goes out of style? Bright, healthy blondes. We are breaking down when to skip toner, pre-toning tips for dark bases and bright blonde formulas to save for later, all while using the right products to keep hair health in mind. Keep scrolling and get ready to save these tips to use at the shampoo bowl later!

1. Light Natural Levels: When To Skip Toner

If your client has a lighter natural level, take advantage of the situation by skipping toner altogether—here’s how from blonding specialist and MUA Trent Broussard (@hair_alchemyxtrent): “[I used] just the evo Fabuloso™ Platinum Blonde Colour Boosting Treatment,” he says. “It’s amazing! [It’s] so hydrating and has the perfect pastel violet hue to tone super bright, lifted blondes,” he adds.

Here’s how to tone with the easy-to-use treatment: After lightening, simply towel-dry the hair. Apply the treatment into your hands throughout the lengths of the hair to tone with the purple pigments and comb through for even distribution. We recommend using a glove for this step!

Pro Tip: Skipping the toner, but still want to maintain a softer grow-out? For those low-maintenance blondes, opt for a small root tap using a gloss.

2. Save This Two-Step Pre-Tone Process For Later

When lifting dark bases, more underlying pigment can be exposed which is where we find warmth. That’s why it’s important to properly prep the hair for toning by neutralizing unwanted warmth during the cleansing process.

Try this ash blonde pre-toning combo from California-based blonding and extensions specialist Nicole Zubair (@n.ingramluck)—and check out the brassy before below!

1. After lightening, cancel out warmth by cleansing with evo Fabuloso™ Platinum Blonde Toning Shampoo. Rinse.

2. Follow with Fabuloso™ Platinum Blonde Colour Boosting Treatment. “Both products had the perfect amount of violet pigment to help pre-tone and also add moisture back into her hair and seal her cuticle,” Nicole explains. Rinse and apply your toner to the now clear, pre-toned canvas.

3. Before styling, prep the hair with evo Fabuloso Platinum Toning Mist for a cool-toned boost. This will also add moisture and heat protection!
