Curl Definition 101: Expert Tips for Perfectly Defined Curls
For defined, frizz-free curls that will keep curly clients coming back to your chair, the right approach is crucial. That’s why we tapped Brendnetta Ashley (@edgybgirl), Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Team Member, to share her top strategies for curl definition—from the art of diffusing to selecting the ideal styling products. Follow these tips for a clear path to achieving flawless curls with definition.
1. How to Choose the Right Product for Definition
Remember, what you apply before diffusing will determine if you maintain moisture, silky shine and definition. Tailor your client’s styling regimen to their needs to eliminate unwanted frizz and dryness, or worse, disturbing their curl pattern. Follow this quick Schwarzkopf Professional product guide that breaks down when—and why!— Brendnetta reaches for each product, and quick application pointers.
FIBRE CLINIX™ Bonding Rich Cream-to-Oil: Layer this strengthening cream that diffuses into an oil to nourish the hair, tame frizz and works as a heat protectant.

Brendnetta’s Favorite! OSiS+ Curl Jam: It’s so important when you apply this defining gel, that you apply it to clean, damp hair, working section by section, says Brendnetta. Separate each cluster to ensure full saturation and allow the hair to set before diffusing.

OSiS+ Bounty Balm: For clients with loose waves and curls that need a little bit of definition, and a lot of body and volume, Brendnetta uses Bounty Balm because it’s lightweight and buildable for light control on fine, medium or coarse hair.

Pro Tip: Apply Bounty Balm on damp hair and work into the curls. Whether you diffuse or air-dry, make sure to get the hair 100 percent dry before slightly opening up some of the curls. It can also be used on dry hair as a polisher.

OSiS+ Tipsy Twirl: Achieve strong definition and lightweight volume with this wave-and-curl-enhancing jelly. Tipsy Twirl vs. Curl Jam—know the difference of ‘hold levels’: Tipsy Twirl, with its medium hold, is designed for wavy-to-curly hair, while Curl Jam, with its softer hold, is ideal for very curly and coily hair.

2. Diffusing Dos & Don’ts for Setting Curls
You’ve applied the product, now it’s time to set the curls. Follow Brendnetta’s non-negotiables for properly diffusing the hair to lock in your curl definition.
1. Dry the outer layer/cast FIRST before touching the curls and emerging the diffuser into the hair. Then, move to the interior. This will prevent frizz and keep defined curls.

2. Have your client flip their head, placing the hair upside-down for more volume.

3. Allow the hair to fully dry before touching the curls. If not, it won’t properly set and will become frizzy.

3. Always Finish with a Polisher
Use a polisher on dry hair to add shine and break the cast of the curls, says Brendnetta. Her go-to product: OSiS+ Glow, frizz control shine serum. How to apply: Take a little into your hands and work it into the curls! Or, Brendnetta will also opt for OSiS+ Bounty Balm.

Pro Tip: Brendnetta finishes with OSiS+ Elastic Hairspray for medium hold and shine.
