Badass, sexy and ultra-wearable—the shag is ALWAYS in style. The Mother of THE SHAG, Sally Hershberger, shares her technique and tips on how to achieve this iconic cut. The rockstar hairdresser is the brains behind rock ‘n’ roll’s most coveted haircut on Joan Jett and the creator of Meg Ryan’s supremely ’90s shag. The ultimate in “non-hairdo-hair,” the shag is perhaps even cooler today than it was then—and now, you can learn how to recreate it from the master herself.
What You'll Learn
Why cutting the Sally Shag is a mindset and how to artistically work with the client’s hair type
How to address the perimeter with precision to allow for creative cutting later
When to cut wet versus cut dry
How to work with disconnection for edgier versus softer shags
Sally’s favorite products and tools to achieve the ultimate sexy shag
I loved the that the haircut can be sexy wavy or beautiful straight.

Sally offered a lot of perspective in her class especially touching on tension on precision. Her eye for hair and it’s movement is what I’m taking home from this “focus on movement “

maybe someone could be more aware of camera angles, so we wouldn't watch minutes of the back of her head or arm, while she stands in front of the camera explaining what we can't see? otherwise, the information was very good. thank you for the class.

While Sally has had amazing success, she is not an educator. She already said she doesn’t talk while she works, the qa was quite distracting to her process and she got lost. She even forgot to cut one side and fixed it during the cross checking.
If you weren’t a very seasoned hairstylist, you would be very confused.

Loved it! This looks so much more glamorous. Happy to see the big hair coming back. Looks like round universal 90 layers from parietal up after perimeter is established, then incorporating more round layers parietal down but decreasing the angle as you go down to the bottom guide, then customizing the top a little shorter and overdirecting the sides in pieces towards the face frame. Definitely a go-to haircut!

I had to google Sally, she is my age and being in the industry for 41 years, I noticed similar styles. I loved how she kept blending and then using her razor to add texture. Being a Roffler trained razor stylist, it was just plain fun to watch Sally cut hair and implement tools, techniques, angles and PRODUCTS!! Mouse is the bomb! Thank you!! I am a Cosmetology instructor in Wisconsin at WCTC Technical College. Using her techniques for my advanced haircutting class will help the students see the importance of cutting wet, dry and using even tension. Her drying techniques are so important in the finish. Revisiting the SHAG is super fun! Thanks again!

I love the concept. However, maybe bring in a couple cameras so we can see different angles, as the stylist needs to move. I think maybe doing a Q and A after the demo would be good. Or, maybe ask for questions before the show, so you know what to ask as they are working. Maybe have a couple models ready so we can see different concepts as they go along.

Watching this was not what I expected. The blonde hair on the white background made it difficult to follow this haircut. Not to mention Sally's Elbow was the view for most of the cut. Where was the full on view of the face while she was cutting. This was not what I expected. The millions of accolades from other reviews left me wondering if they watched the same cut that we watched.

One of my favorite haircuts, it’s very precise yet once it’s styled it looks more organic and disheveled. And best of all was seeing the Sally the Queen of Shags in action.
