Golden Hour Hair: The Warm Balayage Formulas Clients Love

A modern warm balayage requires more than adding gold to the formula. Today’s clients want richness with refinement, glow without brass and dimension that looks natural in every lighting situation. This guide breaks down the formulas, placement strategies and pro-level tips to deliver the glowing results clients are requesting. Scroll down to dive in…

1. Dimensional Bronze Curls

Orlando-based curl specialist Desiree Alyssa (@desireealyssahair) created these bronzy, dimensional curls using a foil-and-backcomb technique tailored for textured hair. Her beautiful client, Keni D Quinones Alamo, aka @curlingmekrazy, lifted to a Level 7/8, so she worked with that warmth, enhancing it with rich bronze tones. Desiree finished with Maria Nila’s Sheer Collection for a reflective, balanced glow that penetrates textured hair beautifully.

Painting Balayage on Curls: Try These Tips!

  • Focus lightener on the ends: Desiree applied the lightener closer to the ends, rather than painting up to the roots, to create soft, sunlit dimension on curls.
  • Use backcombing for diffusion: Backcomb each section one to two times, then apply the lightener through the ends and feather upward for seamless lift without hard lines.
  • Work with the hair’s natural undertones: When her client lifted to a Level 7/8, Desiree chose a bronzy tone to enhance the warm undertones rather than fight them.
  • Tone with balance and reflect: She used 4N at the roots and 8N + 8CG on the ends. Why? The 8CG adds warmth while 8N keeps it controlled.
  • Choose alkaline toners for textured hair: Desiree prefers Maria Nila’s Sheer Collection because the alkaline base helps the toner penetrate curls more effectively.

2. Soft Sandy Glow Balayage

This warm, sandy bronde by Florida-based salon owner and balayage specialist Mallery Share (@hellobalayage) delivers the soft, dimensional glow clients are asking for right now. She says today’s trend leans toward sandy neutrals and warm tones—a shift that not only photographs beautifully but is also easier to maintain. “I keep my brunettes on the sandy side and love using a neutral and violet blend to achieve this look,” she explains.

Pro Tip: Mallery’s Signature Hair Painting Technique

To achieve a dimensional look, Mallery utilizes her custom painting technique. Check out the key details below:

  • What you paint is what you see: Be intentional with every stroke. This technique reveals placement exactly as applied.
  • Leave out select sections: Creating pockets of depth allows for strong, natural dimension that prevents the overall look from going flat.
  • Match previous sessions: If the client already has areas of depth, keep those sections out of your painting to maintain consistent, bold dimension over time.

3. Molten Brunette Balayage Refresh

Mallery’s warm brunette refresh added soft, dimensional glow back into her client’s grown-out balayage. Using a toner blend that boosts mocha warmth and golden reflect, she revived the existing color for a glossy, sunlit brunette that feels fresh and rich.

4. High-Contrast Honey Curls

For this ultra-bright curl moment, Desiree kept the look light and summery with sun-kissed highlights that stay luminous, even for fall. She toned the curls to a soft, dreamy finish without losing their golden pop. The result is high-contrast, high-shine dimension that still feels natural and effortless.

  • Formula B (all-over gloss for the last 5 minutes of processing): Sheer Collection 9.1A + developer

5. Golden Dimensional Blonde

For this dimensional blonde, Desiree skipped toner on the highlights, letting them lift to a naturally golden, warm finish. She then added lowlights and a root tap, creating the perfect neutral backdrop for those warm ribbons to really pop. The result is a soft, blended blonde with bright golden contrast and seamless fall depth.
