Many clients are shifting to shadow roots for more low-maintenance looks, so watch how to nail this conversion with BTC Team Member @wesdoeshair. His technique keeps a bright money piece (because blondes STILL want to be super blonde, no matter what they may say…) but tones down the root for easier grow-out later and gives the look of balayage. Watch how it’s done in the video!

Highlights To Shadow Root Conversion Technique
Here’s what Wes did and why it works:
- Place three foils back to back diagonally at the temple on both sides of the head.
- Place three foils back to back at the top hairline. These foils will be the bright money piece.
- Apply the root toner and feather down an inch or two, leaving out the foiled hairline pieces. Wes used TIGI® copyright©olour gloss in 7/2 + 6/0. This trick will erase the existing highlight grow-out while making it easier for her to naturally grow into her existing root shade, plus it keeps the pop of blonde that formerly-foiled clients love.
- Process for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Apply a final toner on the ends only to tone the existing blonde. Wes used TIGI® copyright©olour gloss in 9/32 + /00.
