There’s nothing worse than styling a client and realizing there’s a harsh line of color where you thought you’d achieved a seamless blend. Instead of taking her back to the bowl, avoid mistakes in the first place with these tips from Lo Wheeler Davis, aka @lo_wheelerdavis, owner of Wheeler Davis Salon in Orange County, Calif.
Lo’s secret weapon? The Olivia Garden iBlend brush, which she uses to blend, blur and detangle. Read her tips and check out some quickie videos from other hairdressers on Instagram!
1. Achieve a blended shadow root
“Many stylists get harsh lines during the toning process because they apply the dark shadow root well before any other tones, which causes overly darkened roots,” Lo says. “I like to apply the shadow formula and second toning formula at the same time and blend with the iBlend section by section for the perfect blend.”

2. Avoid balayage bleed.
“With balayage, it’s common to oversaturate and cause bleed marks,” Lo shares. “The iBlend helps blur out excess product and helps with even distribution.”

3. Maintain the hair’s integrity.
“It’s important to be gentle when detangling wet, color-treated hair because of altered bonds and changes in the elasticity of the hair,” says Lo. “Some brushes tear weakened hair. I use the iBlend to gently detangle all hair types and textures, wet or dry.”
