Impact Without Overfoiling: This Placement Saves Time and Creates a Seamless Blend
This season’s blonde trends feature low-contrast dimension, softness and longevity; so, we tapped expert educator and Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Ambassador Carly Zanoni (@the.blonde.chronicles) to break down her signature Three Layers of Lived-In method. This placement delivers visible change with minimal foils, minimal maintenance and maximum impact, saving you time and money behind the chair.

What Is the “Three Layers of Lived-In” Method?
Carly’s technique, Three Layers of Lived-In, is built from a three-part section parted at the temple, above the ear and the nape. Carly loves this technique because it helps over-foilers stay on track: It only requires 15 to 20 foils, sometimes fewer, as the impact doesn’t come from quantity; it comes from placement.
One of the biggest takeaways from this class? Carly doesn’t root melt this look. “I want to do everything I can in the application to make sure it’s super soft and blended.”
Through zigzag partings, diagonal sections, backcombing and intentional over-direction, Carly builds the blend inside the foil, creating a seamless grow-out. The hairline stays soft. The root stays lived-in. And an entire step is eliminated.
Backcombing Pro Tip: Carly uses a brush instead of a comb to tease her sections. Why? “I just find that it works so much better for me. It makes the tease a lot softer, and I find it’s easier to brush it out,” Carly explains.
Why You Should Keep Your Tip-Outs Fine
Carly utilizes fine tip-outs as an easy way to add brightness without committing to solid blonde ends. Instead of tipping out an entire section, Carly weaves out small, fine sections: “I’m not looking for solid blonde on the ends. If I tipped out this whole section, it would look chunky,” Carly explains. “I just want to add a little brightness.”
Carly’s Tip-Out Must-Dos:
- Keep sections fine and controlled
- Over-direct to maintain softness
- Paint on an angle for a seamless blend
- Focus painting the lower half to the lower third of the section
This subtle step adds brightness where it matters most, without disrupting the lived-in feel of the color—and it’s one of those details that’s best understood by watching Carly execute it in real time. Click here to watch!
Painting Pro Tip: For techniques where Carly is not painting up to the scalp, she reaches for Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME® 9+ Premium Lightener. She shares, “I love the texture for that and the consistency of this lightener. You can get great saturation, too.”
