Living Proof is expanding their dry shampoo lineup with a new format designed to tackle some of the category’s biggest consumer pain points.
The science-backed haircare brand has launched Perfect Hair Day™ Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist, their first non-aerosol dry shampoo. Inspired by micellar cleansing technology commonly used in skincare, the lightweight mist is designed to actually clean hair while delivering a 100 percent invisible finish and weightless feel.
The launch addresses a significant gap in dry shampoo usage. According to Living Proof, nearly seven in 10 women in the U.S. wash their hair only a few times per week, yet just two in 10 reach for dry shampoo. Among the biggest barriers? White, chalky residue and hair that doesn’t feel truly clean.
“People know us as the leader in dry shampoo innovation, and they expect the highest level of performance from our products. That means the bar for anything new is really high,” says Lauren Fenton, CMO of Living Proof. “In this case, we saw a true consumer need and evolving consumer preferences, paired with our ability to deliver a unique solution through our MIT-born approach to innovation.”
Lauren says interest in non-aerosol dry shampoos has also grown significantly, with searches for the format increasing more than 400 percent over the last year.
“So, we set out to create a non-aerosol dry shampoo that performs at the level people expect from Living Proof, without the visible residue,” she says. “884 performance tests, 314 experiments and 146 prototypes later, we did it.”
To develop Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist, Living Proof scientists looked outside traditional haircare and drew inspiration from micellar cleansing technologies used in skincare.
At the center of the formula is the brand’s patent-pending Micellar Bi-phase Cleansing System, a dual-action technology designed specifically for hair. Micelles help break down and loosen oil from the scalp and hair while ultra-light microspheres absorb and lock it in.
The formula also features a Micro-suspending Network, which helps keep cleansing and care ingredients evenly dispersed for consistent, weightless application, and Bioadaptive Superfruit, which helps maintain scalp moisture, balance, and comfort.
“Creating a non-aerosol solution that delivers the high-performance clean consumers have come to expect from Living Proof, while achieving a truly invisible finish, was an incredibly complex technical challenge,” says Ron McLaughlin, Chief R&D Officer at Living Proof.
According to Ron, the brand completed 884 performance tests, 314 experiments and 146 prototypes, while also evaluating more than 30 pump options before arriving at the final formula and delivery system.
Lauren says looking beyond traditional haircare technologies was key to getting there. “Being able to deliver the highest level of performance, without any downsides or compromises, is a true feat of innovation,” she says. “We looked outside of traditional haircare technologies and drew inspiration from micellar cleansing technologies used in skincare.”

The product wasn’t developed through lab testing alone. Living Proof says licensed, practicing stylists are embedded within its R&D process, working alongside formulators and testing products directly on hair throughout development.
“Professional stylist expertise is built directly into our R&D process,” Lauren says. “We have licensed, practicing stylists on our R&D team who work alongside our formulators throughout development, conducting daily testing on hair and supporting technical lab testing.”
For Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist, she says that professional perspective helped the team evaluate the qualities that matter behind the chair—including how the hair feels, moves and performs after application.
“The result is a sheer, lightweight refresh that leaves hair feeling truly clean and touchable, without the powdery residue or buildup that can come with some traditional dry shampoos,” Lauren says.

The new mist also gives Living Proof another option within an increasingly personalized dry shampoo lineup.
“Dry shampoo used to be ‘one size fits all,’ but that has changed over the last five years,” Lauren says. “Now, consumers want dry shampoo solutions tailored to their unique needs and usage occasions, and they want added benefits beyond the primary cleaning benefit. Dry shampoo is becoming hyper-personalized.”
Living Proof’s Original Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo offers cleaning with added body and texture, while Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo is designed for clients seeking a softer finish with added softness and shine. Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist offers a lighter, non-aerosol option for consumers looking for an everyday refresh without visible powder.
Living Proof first entered the dry shampoo category in 2015 and says one of its dry shampoos is now sold every 10 seconds globally, based on 2025 sales.
“For more than a decade, Living Proof has pushed the boundaries of what dry shampoo can achieve through breakthrough science and a deep understanding of our consumers,” says Brian Kennedy, CEO of Living Proof. “Perfect Hair Day™ Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist represents the next chapter in our dry shampoo innovation journey and our continued commitment to developing solutions that evolve alongside changing consumer needs and routines.”
Consumer testing also reinforced the brand’s emphasis on the invisible finish. Living Proof says 100 percent of testers agreed that Sheer Clean Dry Shampoo Mist had an invisible finish, while 88 percent of dry shampoo non-users and rejectors said they would continue using the product.
“Technological breakthrough on its own means nothing if it doesn’t add meaningful value to the consumer,” Lauren says. “To have formulated a product that performs so well that we can change people’s minds about the category is a true breakthrough.”
