Ribboning Technique

Before: The model is a Level 4 with previous color.

Start with a zigzag section from occipital bone to nape. Next, take a section from above the ear to the round of the head. Take horseshoe section at the top. Using zigzag and diagonal sections ensures more diffused color.

Begin applying Formula A to the middle section, feathering up to the root but not applying at the root. Repeat the process on the top section. Apply the formula with a brush, then use your hands to ensure even saturation. Process until you reach a light red (about 15 minutes), then shampoo with Revlon Professional Post-Color Shampoo. Apply Revlon Professional Anti-Porosity Milk (do not rinse out) and blow-dry.

Pro Tip: Marlo mixes Revlon Professional Post-Color Shampoo into the lightening formula for control. “We don’t want to overlighten her—we just want to expose the underlying pigment, which is red, since our goal is a shade of red,” Marlo said.

Create a zigzag section around the crown. Apply Formula B from roots to ends on the bottom section, then apply it at the roots only on the top section to create a shadow root. “I like to say a shadow root is like taking a picture and putting a frame on it,” Marlo said. “It really showcases the color technique.”

Begin the ribbon technique with Formula C at a ¼-inch diagonal section at the hairline. Use Revlon Professional Freedom Papers to separate sections. Blend well between the root shadow and the mids/ends color.

Pro Tip: Diagonal placement diffuses color—for stronger placement, take vertical sections.

Continue working in ¼-inch diagonal sections around to the back of the head, alternating between Formulas C, D, E and F.

Process for 30 minutes.

Pull each section out of the Freedom Paper and rinse in cold water. Shampoo with Revlon Professional Post-Color Shampoo. For serious shine, apply Revlon Professional Nutri Color Crème 000. Blow-dry and style as desired.
