For Christian Soriano’s A/W 2013 Fashion Week show, Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders and her team created regal fishtail braids inspired by the golden age of Russian Opera. “The clothing is rich and opulent, so we designed a sophisticated, feminine look to properly complement it,” she says. “From the front, the look has a lovely roundness. The braids at the back evoke refinement and glamour, reminiscent of a Russian girl dressed for an evening at the opera.” SHOP More How-Tos in the BTC BookstoreSubscribe to behindthechair.com On Paper Magazine! Prep hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep to give hair some texture and grit. Blow-dry hair straight then create a clean center part from forehead to nape using a tail comb. Make an inverted fishtail braid on each side of the head, beginning at the crown and working to the back of the ear. Secure the end of each braid with an elastic band. Tame flyaways with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

Add some fullness by gently massaging braids. Fold the braids over one another across the back of the head, just above the nape, in a crisscross fashion. Tuck ends under and secure with bobby pins. Finish with a misting of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
