Section off the top area, working with the client’s desired part.
- 3Step 3 of 13

Starting at the right temple below the parting, take a horizontal section and cut the length to 1.5 inches using a clipper-over-comb technique. Continue working to the right-back of the head—right where the head starts to get round! Then, cut the other side from the left temple area to the left-back using the same technique.

- 5Step 5 of 13

Then, take 1/2-inch vertical partings and cut using a palm to palm technique starting in the center-back. Cut the length to 2 inches at the top and and 1 inch at the bottom of the parting. Continue to cut with this technique from the center-back to right-back, then from the center-back to the left-back.
- 6Step 6 of 13

Use clippers and a #3 guard to cut from the nape to the occipital, then working to both sides at about 1 inch above each ear.
- 7Step 7 of 13

Connect and blend the clipper-cut area and the longer hair above using a shear-over-comb technique. Then, taper the neckline.
- 8Step 8 of 13

Release the top section and comb forward. Take a 1/2-inch horizontal parting at the crown, stand directly behind the client and weave the hair with a feather razor. Angle the razor blade and cut up toward the ends. Continue this technique to the front hairline using 1/2-inch horizontal partings.
- 9Step 9 of 13

Holding the hair up in the front, use a penciling technique in an upward motion to add lift to the front section. Then, use a freehand penciling technique in a downward motion throughout to add texture.
- 10Step 10 of 13

Add more texture to the crown area using a bush-whacking technique and a carving comb.
- 11Step 11 of 13

Blow-dry and style as desired.
