Before, starting on virgin Level 6 hair.

Start by applying Joico Defy Damage Pro-Series 1 through the hair in 2-inch sections. Comb through for even distribution.

Part hair down the middle going toward the back. Section each side into the three large diagonal parts and clip away from each other.

Now part the front section down the middle and clip away into two parts.

Starting at the back two sections, apply Formula A in a heavy balayage. Continue to balayage, moving up to the middle section and add a Velcro roller underneath.

Pro Tip: The rollers give you the ability to create thicker sections with even saturation without the lightener bleeding through to the next section, so you can work faster behind the chair.

  6. 6Step 6 of 14

Continue balayaging and adding rollers until you finish all six back sections. For the last two sections, take a large diagonal parting, balayage the top and set a roller underneath. Repeat until the section is finished and continue on the other side.

Let process until you reach a Level 9 and then rinse using Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo

Apply Formula B on towel dried hair and let sit for three minutes. Rinse out using Defy Damage Protective Shampoo and Protective Conditioner and let the hair completely dry. Then apply Defy Damage Pro-Series 1 throughout the hair again.

  10. 10Step 10 of 14

Part the hair down the middle. Starting in the back, take a large horizontal section and weave a large part out. Apply Formula D to the bottom and the base, but apply Formula C to the weaved out section. Continue this step on both sides of the head.

Note: Make sure you lay Formula C's pieces on one side and Formula D's pieces on another so they criss cross.

Once the front is reached, repeat the same application process using diagonal back partings. This should leave out a triangle front face frame section.

Pro Tip: Bring Formula C higher up in the face frame depending on how high up you took your balayage.

Let the hair process for 20 minutes and then cleanse with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo. Apply Joico Defy Damage Pro Series 2 and let sit for five minutes. Rinse, blowout and style the hair as desired.
