Before, starting Level 4/5 with 75% gray.

Prep the hair with Defy Damage Pro Series 1 from Joico. Shake the can vigorously and spray short bursts into two inch sections throughout the head. Comb through to ensure even distribution. Then, section the head into three sections: down the middle and from the crown to the top of each ear.

  3. 3Step 3 of 11

Starting in the back, apply Formula A to the regrowth area using 1/8 inch partings.

When retouching the top, take diagonal parting using a tear-drop application to create a blended shadow root. Once the regrowth has been applied, use a center parting to section the back in half.

PRO TIP: Use a comb at the temple area when applying Formula A to ensure complete gray coverage.

  6. 6Step 6 of 11

Take a large diagonal forward parting about 2-3 inches and apply Formula B for a lowlight. Above the diagonal parting, take a fine slice and use a balayage technique to apply Formula C, making sure to fully saturate the section. Repeat on either side until you reach the crown, ending with a balayage section on top and about 3-4 sections on either side depending on the hair type and density.

PRO TIP: To avoid any color bleeding, keep all balayage sections on one side and lowlight sections on the other.

  7. 7Step 7 of 11

Working in the front, take a diagonal back, 2-inch section that extends from the crown to the temple and repeat the lowlight application. Above the diagonal back section, take a fine slice and apply Formula D using a balayage technique. Repeat working up towards the head.

PRO TIP: As you work up towards the crown, the balayage partings should start lower on the hair shaft. This will result in more depth and dimension in the final look.

  8. 8Step 8 of 11

For the face frame, take a triangular parting at the front hairline and clip away. Apply Formula B to the remaining hair, and balayage the face frame section using Formula D. Repeat on the opposite side.

PRO TIP: This is the only section that will use a face frame parting instead of a diagonal back section.

Shampoo with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo and treat with Defy Damage Pro Series 2. Allow Pro Series 2 to process for five minutes and rinse. Dry and style as desired.
