- 1Step 1 of 18

Visualize a high, tilted horseshoe-shaped parting. It should sit higher at the front hairline to allow for more scalp exposure and the back of the horseshoe should rest just below the occipital bone.
- 2Step 2 of 18

Start removing bulk from the bottom half of the head using freehand clipper work with the #1.5 blade.
- 3Step 3 of 18

Continue removing weight until the bottom half of the head is complete.
- 4Step 4 of 18

Then, go back in to the bottom half with the #1 blade, working freehand with moderate tension to create scalp exposure in Zone 1.
- 5Step 5 of 18

Continue around the back and both sides.
- 6Step 6 of 18

Then, start with the horizontal transition. With a closed blade, work freehand suspended in panels to create a square shape on the top half of the head.
- 7Step 7 of 18

Continue working in panels around the top of the head.
- 8Step 8 of 18

Square off the top with a closed blade working freehand suspended with the clipper. Take the necessary amount of length down to create a flat top.
- 9Step 9 of 18

Starting on one side, refine the square silhouette with freehand suspended clipper work.
- 10Step 10 of 18

Continue around the back of the head, to the other side and the front hairline.
- 11Step 11 of 18

Go back into Zone 1 with freehand clipper work and freehand fanning to refine the fade. Make adjustments according to growth direction.
- 12Step 12 of 18

Refine the transition with freehand suspended scissor work.
- 13Step 13 of 18

Continue working with freehand suspended scissors throughout the top.
- 14Step 14 of 18

Strengthen the shape by etching in the front hairline. Work from the center out.
- 15Step 15 of 18
Apply American Crew® Pomade to the exterior of the shape to add shine and refinement.
