Light plays a major factor when creating beautiful, dimensional color. Where is the light hitting the color? Where are the shadows? Where are the reflections? These are the questions to think about when masterfully melting different formulas. Ulta Beauty Pro Team Member Sean Godard uses this geodesic sectioning technique to create the most dimension within the color, and for a reflective end result that’s gorgeous from any angle. Here’s how it’s done. (more…)

Begin by sectioning the front from the back using a vertical parting that extends from the high point of the head to just behind the ear. Then divide the back of the head in half horizontally just above the ear. From here, create three triangle subsections in the nape with the center triangle pointing downward. Next, create three triangular subsections in the back, top section (at the crown area) with the center triangle pointing down toward the nape of the head.

For the front sections, work off the client’s natural part. On this model, Sean created a deep side part. On the shallow side create two triangular subsections by dividing the side with a diagonal forward parting. On the other side (the heavy side), create three triangle subsections, using diagonal forward partings.

For the color application, apply Formula A to the first 1½ to 2 inches of hair in the first triangle section.

Then, within that section, create ¼–inch vertical subsections and apply Formula B to the midlengths and Formula D to the ends. Blur and blend the colors to create a melted effect. On the next ¼–inch subsection, apply Formula C at the midlengths and Formula D to the ends remembering to blend the color to create a melted end result.

Continue to apply Formula A to the first 1½ to 2 inches of hair throughout every triangle section, follow by alternating between Formulas B and C in the midlengths and apply Formula D to all ends. Color each triangle subsection this way.
