Why Your Bridal Styles Fall Flat & Pro Tips to Make Them Last

For our beloved brides, creating a look that lasts from “I do” to the last dance is essential. That’s why Texas-based hairstylist Carlos Rojas (@colorbycarlos) planned ahead when styling his bride. With two looks to prepare for the ceremony and reception, learn how Carlos designs a soft, romantic downstyle with a side part that seamlessly transitions into a chic party pony.

The key to success? Avoiding the five common bridal styling mistakes below. Swipe through the slides to see the two looks Carlos created:

Mistake #1: Not Properly Erasing the Style Memory from Look 1 to Look 2

A strong side part can create a beautiful shape for a bride’s ceremony style. But, if it’s not properly reset before transitioning into the second look, it can leave behind an unwanted crease or separation.

To remove style memory, Carlos recommends slightly dampening the root and overdirecting the section forward while blow-drying.

Pro Tip: Overdirect the section side to side while drying. “This will neutralize the part—especially if someone has a cowlick,” Carlos explains.

Mistake #2: Applying the Same Pony Placement for Every Client

One-size-fits-all doesn’t apply to bridal styling, especially when placing a ponytail. A poorly placed pony can flatten the face, while the right placement can enhance a bride’s facial structure.

Use this celebrity stylist-approved trick Carlos learned from Schwarzkopf Professional® Global Ambassador Chris Appleton (@chrisappleton1): Follow the line of the cheekbone directly up to the top of the head. This custom placement will enhance the cheekbone and create a flattering, snatched look.

Mistake #3: Skipping Extension Prep

Extensions are a staple in bridal styling, but straight out of the package, they often have a coated, waxy finish that can weigh down the look or create an artificial feel.

Always prep clip-in extensions before use! Carlos swears by Schwarzkopf Professional FIBRE CLINIX® Bondfinity Purifying Shampoo to remove any buildup and bring extensions back to life.

Mistake #4: Setting the Ponytail in One Section Instead of Three

A ponytail secured in a single section can be too tight, unflattering or lack shape in photos. Carlos wanted a soft, effortless texture—so he built the ponytail in three strategic sections for a better shape, control and longevity.

Follow his roadmap to stay organized with ease:

  • Step 1: The anchor pony—Start by securing the base tightly with a bungee elastic.
  • Step 2: The second section—Build on the anchor, separating the back from the front to maintain volume and structure from all angles.
  • Step 3: The final section—Wrap the hair around the face softly, securing each piece individually. Spritz Schwarzkopf Professional OSIS+® Dust It from behind for added texture and light hold.

Product Suggestion for Hold: As each section is secured, Carlos locks in the style with Schwarzkopf Professional OSIS+® Freeze Hairspray to ensure it lasts all night.

Mistake #5: Not Creating Proper Style Memory: How To Pick Your Products

If you want a bridal style to last without looking stiff, the right products make all the difference. Carlos’ go-to? Schwarzkopf Professional’s NEW To Have & To Hold Kit! It’s a bridal stylist must-have—find the kit offerings below:

  • OSIS+® Freeze: Medium-hold hairspray
  • OSIS+® Grip: Extra-strong mousse
  • OSIS+® Glow: Anti-frizz shine serum
  • OSIS+® Dust It: Mattifying volume powder
  • OSIS+® Thrill: Elastic fiber gum

One of the products Carlos used for both looks is OSIS+® Dust It. “This is the most potent little container you’ll ever find,” he says. OSIS+® DUST IT is a mattifying volume powder that creates effortless, fluffy texture while giving the style lasting memory.

Application Warning: A little goes a long way! Be wary of over-application during the downstyle—but, for the pony, go wild. “Since this isn’t our only style, if we overdo it now, we’re setting ourselves up for heartache with the second look—our party pony,” Carlos adds.
