Now that fall is almost here, the weather’s getting colder, the clothes are getting cuter and all that vivid/neon/rainbow hair? It’s going back to au natural! So when Shannon Grimmer-Smolar’s (@shannongrimmer_smolar, owner of Fringe Salon in Merrillville, Ind.) client wanted a lower-maintenance shade for the autumn season, Shannon knew exactly what to do.
“Knowing she was ready for a color transformation, my client hadn't refreshed her vivid color, and had been shampooing at home with a deep cleansing shampoo for about a month prior to her appointment,” says Shannon. “Her natural level 6/7 had been religiously lightened to play with several different vivid colors prior to this.”
So how did Shannon achieve such a gorgeous, organic blend? She shares her color formula and how-to below.

Steps
1. Apply Formula A from the scalp to the midshaft. Process without heat.
2. Apply Formula B, this time only on select midshaft areas if some color remains. Pull through to the ends. “I worked quickly on this round,” says Shannon, “because you can literally see the color start to move on the ends, and I didn’t want to compromise her ends.”
3. Shampoo and condition, then apply Kevin Murphy STAYING.ALIVE Leave-In Conditioner to keep the hair strong and help equalize any over-porous areas. Blow-dry.
4. Apply Formula C to the root area, then, working in horizontal sections, use your fingers with medium pressure to blend the color down 1 to 2 inches from the root. Process for 35 minutes without heat.
5. Apply Formula D to towel-dried hair on the root area, blending into the midshaft. Process for 20 minutes. During the last 10 minutes of processing, tone the ends using Formula E.
6. Apply Kevin Murphy HAIR.RESORT.SPRAY, blow-dry, then add organic flat iron waves and finish the look with Kevin Murphy DOO.OVER Dry Powder Finishing Hairspray.
