So your client wants to go gray for the summer, but is hesitant to commit. Show her how cool that smoky gray hue would be paired with an on-trend shadow root and she won’t be able to say no! That’s exactly what Jackie Hovorka (@fullmetaljaxon) recently did for her client—and the look received more than 7,000 likes on our Instagram! Check out the color formula and how-to below.

The Formulas
- Natural/Starting Level:
- ½-inch of regrowth
- Formula A (lightener):
- Keune Magic Blonde Lightener + 25-volume developer
- Formula B (shadow root):
- #mydentity 3 oz. 8DL + 2 oz. Dark Shadows
- Formula C (midlengths/ends):
- Kenra Professional Demi-Permanent Color 1 oz. 10A + 1 oz. 10V + 4 oz. 9-volume developer
Steps
1. First, touch up her base by applying Formula A with a small brush. Process for 35 minutes. “I used a smaller brush to prevent lightener from overlapping because my client’s hair was very fine and fragile,” shares Jackie.
2. Mix shampoo into the remainder of Formula A and bleach bathe any warmth on her ends leftover from a previous color application. Process for about 5 to 10 minutes. Wash, then dry the hair.
3. Create a shadow root by applying Formula B to the roots only. Then, apply Formula C from the midlengths to the ends.
4. Rinse the hair, then blow-dry. Style using a Bio Ionic® flat iron and finish with L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil Hair Plumper.
