Toning is the key to creating a beautiful finished haircolor, but a lot of colorists overlook the process. We caught up with Matrix Artistic Director Lenny Strand who believes in turning toning services into moneymaking techniques. His advice is to use more than one formula and to never apply the gloss at the shampoo bowl. Here are his formulas and steps for this lovely metallic lilac.

The Formulas

Formula A (balayage):
Matrix Light Master + 40-volume developer + Bond Ultim8
Formula B (base):
Color Sync 9M + Watercolors Smoky Lilac + 10-volume developer
Formula C (mids/ends):
Color Sync SPV + Smoky Lilac +10-volume developer

Steps

1. Balayage the entire head with Formula A and let process.

2. Wash the hair and towel-dry at the bowl.

3. Then, take your client back to your station and dry the hair 80 percent. Then tone.

4. Use Formula B at the base for 15 minutes, apply Formula C at the mids for 10 minutes and finally apply Formula C at the ends for 5 minutes.
