Mary's Blonde Balayage Transformation

When you visit the salon near and dear to celebs like Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham—oh, and OPRAH—you’re bound to step out looking like a star. And that’s what happened when BTC’s Mary Rector-Gable visited Ken Paves Salon in Los Angeles.

Mary had her own Hollywood moment when she was treated to a little hair love by Ken and colorist Christina Fyffe at Ken’s West Hollywood salon. And if you’re thinking, “Ummm…I NEED that amazing color formula so I can create some hair magic in my own salon,” then you’re in luck. Here, Ken and Christina share their “recipe” for Mary’s gorgeous blonde balayage!

The Formulas

Formula A (highlights):
Wella Blondor + Olaplex + 30-volume developer at the roots, melting into Wella Blondor + Olaplex + 20-volume developer
Formula B (base color):
Wella Koleston 6/7 Dark Blonde/Brown + 10-volume developer
Formula C:
Wella Koleston 7/7 Medium Blonde/Brown + 10-volume developer
Formula D:
Wella Koleston 0/00 Clear Tone + Wella Color Touch Emulsion 1.9%
Formula E:
Wella Koleston 5/0 + 10-volume developer
Formula F:
Wella Blondor Freelights + Olaplex + 30-volume developer
Formula G (toner):
Redken Shades EQ 9P

Steps

1. Highlight using Formula A.

2. Apply Formula B between the foils, feathering in Formulas C and D on the ends.

3. Randomly feather Formulas B and C down at different lengths throughout the head to create a more natural look.

4. To create multi-tonal dimension, layer Formula E into a few of the Formula B pieces.
Note: When the color is done this way, you’re able to visualize where your dimension will be—like reverse balayage with lightener!

5. Balayage the ends using Formula F.

6. Rinse, then tone using Formula G for 3 to 4 minutes.

7. Rinse again, and apply Olaplex No.2.

8. Shampoo and condition.
