The Formulas

Starting Level
Level 5 roots; combination of Level 9 and Level 5 ends
Formula A (prelightener)
Joico Blonde Life Lightening Powder + 20-volume developer
Formula B (roots)
Eufora Color 4.0 + 3.22 + 5.22 + 10-volume developer
Formula C (ends)
Joico Color Intensity Magenta + Hot Pink

Steps

1. Using foils and Formula A, prelighten the ends, pulling random pieces closer to the root.

2. Apply Formula B to select strands in the root area, and process for 45 minutes.

3. Apply Formula C to any pieces left out, and process for 20 minutes.

4. Shampoo, towel-dry and apply Formula C to the ends at the sink, making sure to saturate completely. Process for 15 minutes, rinse with cool water, condition, and rinse with cool water once more.

For the cut, Julie used vertical sectioning in the back and graduated her fingers down toward the bottom to give her client a tight stack, while trimming the ends. “I always leave my perimeter edge until the very end,” says Julie. She followed this guide to the front, taking diagonal partings and pulling everything back to the back guide, leaving as much length as possible.

After drying, round-brushing and flat ironing, she started her detail work, cutting the entire outer perimeter to make sure it was a clean, crisp line. She had her client look down as she completed the back (to ensure a tight angle).
