Jennifer Garner just dropped the ultimate summer brunette—and it’s proof you don’t have to go full blonde to go brighter. Schwarzkopf Professional® U.S. Creative Director of Color and Technique Tracey Cunningham (@traceycunningham1) added golden, chunky highlights through Jen’s signature brunette, for a sunkissed look with serious dimension.

It’s a modern take on early 2000s highlights and a perfect option for women over 50 who want to lighten up without the upkeep of a full blonde transformation. Here's how Tracey did it.

But first, click the image below to watch her full process:

The Formulas

Formula A (lightener)
Schwarzkopf Professional® BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ + 30-volume developer
Formula B (base)
Schwarzkopf Professional® IGORA® Vibrance 9-00 + IGORA® Vibrance 8-1 + IGORA® Vibrance 7-00 + IGORA® Vibrance 6-1 + 13-volume developer
Formula C (zone 2)
IGORA® Vibrance 9-0 + developer
Formula D (all-over gloss)
IGORA® Vibrance 9-7 + IGORA® Vibrance 0-55 + developer (1:1)

Steps

  1. Apply Formula A to create highlights throughout the hair. Tracey lifted select sections using BLONDME Lightener 9+ with 30-volume developer to create soft, blended ribbons of brightness that pop against a brunette base.
  2. Apply Formula B to the root area and let process for 20 minutes.
  3. Use Formula C through the midlengths (Zone 2) to connect the root to the lightened ends, blending the overall tone without over-depositing pigment or dulling the lift.
  4. Finish with Formula D as an all-over gloss, let process for one minute.
