Balayage is among the most-requested haircolor techniques, and it's not hard to see why. The free-hand technique of painting lightener onto the hair puts the stylist in complete control of his or her work. Not to mention the results are stunning. Marissa Neel of Republic Salon in Folsom, CA wanted her client's locks to be bright and beachy, but very low maintenance. So she whipped up this custom formulation that gave her client's blonde mane a multidimensional, natural-looking effect. Here's her must-have formula!

6, dark blonde
Formula A (balayage):
Wella Professionals Blondor Multi Blonde Lightening Powder + 40-volume developer + 1/8 oz. Olpalex

2. Working your way up the head, paint with Formula A where you want to see the lighter pieces.

3. Once you finish your balayage, wrap each section in Saran Wrap.

4. Allow the hair to process for 30 to 45 minutes, until a Level 9 blonde is achieved.

5. Rinse and tone with Formula B for 10 to 15 minutes.
