While it's not as obvious as a fashion color fade out, when the bright balayage fades and the new growth settles in, it's time to give her dull locks a much-needed refresher. And if she wants to stick to a lived-in feel while embracing warmth, we recommend checking out this stunning dimensional, foilayaged brunette haircolor formula from Orange County-based colorist Kelly Naso (@kellynaso). Dying to know the deets? Keep reading to get Kelly's color formulas and the how-to steps!

"Overall we wanted a more dimensional look, where it’s lived-in but also has pops of highs that stand out," shares Kelly. "So to refresh it, I decided to foilayage while adding depth with signature lowlights to break it up."

The Formulas

Natural Level:
2
Formula A:Wella Professionals BLONDOR + Wella Welloxon Perfect Developer (6%) + b3 Brazilian Bond Builder Formula B:Wella Color Touch Plus 66/03 + Color Touch Intensive Emulsion Developer (1.9%) + b3 Brazilian Bond Builder Formula C:
BLONDOR + Wella Color Touch Intensive Emulsion Developer (4%) + b3 Brazilian Bond Builder

Steps

1. Start on the side sections and weave ½-inch diagonal forward sections. Then, tease and apply Formula A by sweeping the formula up lightly to avoid creating harsh lines.

2. Then, take thicker sections and apply Formula B as a lowlight in-between the weaved sections.

3. Once you reach the top of the crown area, paint babylights with Formula C for a seamless, lived-in transition into the foilayage.

4. For the face-framing area, paint microlights using Formula C placing three foils for the money piece.

5. Process, then shampoo with Davines NOUNOU Shampoo.

6. Then, apply Formula D to the new growth and process for 15 minutes or until the hair is slightly warmer. “This softens the entire look, without having a harsh regrowth as well,” notes Kelly. “I use a lower volume developer because i don’t want to vigorously expose underlying pigments in her hair for an unnatural look."

7. Rinse, then gloss with Formula E and process for 20 minutes.

8. Rinse again, then apply Wella Service Post Color Treatment and leave on for 5 minutes.

9. Condition with Davines NOUNOU Conditioner, then blow-dry and style as desired.
