There is no such thing as a standard brunette—and Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood proves this by adding fashion color accent pieces throughout a rich brunette base. Check out his formulas and methods for keeping brunettes anything but basic.
The Formulas
- Formula A:
- 1 oz. 5Va Color Fusion + 1 oz. 5T Color Fusion + 2 oz. 10-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer
- Formula B:
- 1½ oz. 5Va Color Fusion + ½ oz. 5T Color Fusion + 2 oz. 20-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer
- Formula C:
- 1 scoop Flash Lift Maximum Power Lightening Powder + 2 oz. 20-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer
- Formula D:
- 1 oz. 09T Chrome Shades EQ Gloss + 1 oz. 09P Opal Glow Shades EQ Gloss + 2 oz. Shades EQ Processing Solution
- Formula E:
- 3 parts City Beats Clear + 1 part City Beats East Village Violet
- Formula F:
- 3 parts City Beats Clear + 1 part City Beats Broadway Blue
Steps
Starting Level: Natural Level 4, Light Brown
1. Apply Formula A to the roots and midlengths using a global application, then immediately apply Formula B to the ends. Let process at room temperature for 35 minutes. Shampoo with Redken Color Extend Magnetics and dry hair.
2. Apply Formula C using a balayage technique. Let process at room temperature until light blonde or up to 50 minutes. Shampoo with Redken Chemistry Extreme for dry hair.
3. Before applying Formula E and F, pre-tone with Formula D on all prelightened sections to neutralize any remaining warmth. Process at room temperature for 20 minutes.
4. Then, to add pops of color on the prelightened sections, apply Formulas E and F to the midlengths and ends using a checkerboard (or bricklay) blur technique.
5. Continue with the same method, alternating the placement of Formulas E and F until all prelightened sections are complete.
6. Process at room temperature for 30 minutes, then rinse. Do not shampoo. Then, on towel-dried hair, apply pH-Bonder #2 Fiber Restorative Pre-wash Concentrate for 10 minutes. Rinse and follow with Color Extend Magnetics.
