Create blended, dimensional brunette on long hair by using toners that complement each other—like one dark formula and one light formula, says Redken Global Color Creative Director Josh Wood. Here are his formulas and steps for achieving a beautiful brunette balayage on longer locks.
The Formulas
- Formula A:
- ¼ oz. 2N Color Fusion + 1¾ oz. 4Ag Color Fusion + 20-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer
- Formula B:
- 1 part Blonde Idol Free Hand Clay-Based Lightener + 1.5 parts 40-volume Pro-oxide Cream Developer
- Formula C:
- 2 oz. 08GG Gold Dip Shades EQ Gloss + 2 oz. Shades EQ Processing Solution
- Formula D:
- 2 oz. 07GB Butterscotch Shades EQ Gloss + 2 oz. Shades EQ Processing Solution
Steps
Starting Level: Natural Level 2, Dark Brown
1. Apply Formula A to the roots using a global application. Let process at room temperature for 35 minutes, then shampoo and condition with Redken Color Extend Magnetics.
2. Apply Formula B to the midlengths and ends using a balayage technique. Process at room temperature until pale yellow or up to 50 minutes. Shampoo with Redken Chemistry Extreme.
3. To glaze prelightened sections, apply Formulas C and D to the midlengths and ends using both horizontal and vertical blur techniques. (Try the Redken Blur Brush to seamlessly blend formulas together!)
4. Process at room temperature for 30 minutes and rinse. Do not shampoo. Then, on towel-dried hair, apply pH-Bonder #2 Fiber Restorative Pre-wash Concentrate for 10 minutes. Rinse and follow with Color Extend Magnetics.
